PROJECT SUMMARY
Scope It Out is a mobile app designed to help users find events in their area tailored to their astrological sign or weekly horoscope. The app's recommendation algorithm uses data collected from astrologists to determine key traits for each sign, making personalized suggestions to match the user's interests. In this case study, we will dive into the UI/UX design process for Scope It Out.
PROBLEM
challenge of discovering new events, restaurants, and activities in a new city
Finding new and exciting events, restaurants, and activities can be difficult in a new city. Traditional methods of making lists and searching for things to do often result in boredom and a lack of awareness about all the events happening in the area. This leads to a missed opportunity to fully experience the city and discover hidden gems.
GOALS
primary
develop a user-friendly event discovery solution that helps newcomers find personalized recommendations for events, activities, and restaurants in the area
secondary
implement a personalized approach based on the user's zodiac sign and horoscope, utilizing data from certified astrologists
SOLUTION
an app called Scope It Out!
It was designed with focus on creating an intuitive and modern interface that is easy to navigate, with a simple and clean layout that emphasizes key features of the app. The application featured:
1.
a personalized approach to event recommendations, based on the user's zodiac sign and horoscope reading for the week
Data on key traits for each zodiac sign are collected weekly, and are used to generate recommendations for events, activities, and restaurants in the user's area.
2.
a user feedback system allowing users to provide feedback on events they have attended and rate their overall experience
Users can also leave comments and suggestions for future events. This feedback is then used to improve the app's event recommendation algorithm. By analyzing user ratings and comments, the app can better understand the preferences and interests of its users, and tailor event recommendations accordingly. This creates a feedback loop that continually improves the app's recommendations and enhances the overall user experience.
3.
a feature that allows users to save events to their personalized calendar and receive regular updates on upcoming events in their area
This was implemented to further enhance user engagement and retention. Additionally, we ensured that the app was easily customizable, with users able to filter events by their interests and preferences.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
my role - UI/UX design
I played a key role in creating a user-centered design that meets the needs of our target audience. My responsibilities:
1
creating a comprehensive style guide that documented the typography, color palette, and visual elements used in the app's UI to ensure consistency
2
designing the logo, which had to be both memorable and representative of the app's core features, while effectively relaying the app's purpose
3
creating low fidelity wireframes that depicted the app's layout and info architectureand heled ensure that the app's features were logically organized and easy to navigate
4
converting wireframes to a high fidelity prototype that depicted the app's final design and test the app's usability in a realistic setting

RESEARCH
we conducted a survey to understand our potential users' interests and pain points when it comes to finding events in their area
The survey revealed that many people struggled to find events that align with their interests and that they often miss out on events because they are not aware of them.
Next, we analyzed the app market to identify opportunities for our app to succeed. Below are our findings, whch aided us in finalizing our decision to jump into the app market.
We also generated an expected revenue model to determine whether the project would be profitable or not.
We also researched astrology and consulted with certified astrologists to understand the key traits of each sign. This helped us create personalized experiences for users, tailored to their unique personality traits based on their sign.
IDEATION PHASE
With our research in hand, we started ideating on the features and design of Scope It Out. We created user personas to represent our target audience and identified key features that would meet their needs. These included:
1
personalized event recommendation system based on zodiac sign and horoscope
2
user feedback system to improve the event recommendation algorithm
3
calendar feature to keep track of upcoming events
4
search bar to find events by keyword or location
5
filter system to refine search results by date, price, and category
6
community chat thread to meet new people and discover more events in the area

wireframes
Combining our discoveries from ideation with the style guide, I created wireframes to map out the app's user flow and design. My focus was on keeping the design clean, intuitive, and visually appealing. We also made sure to incorporate the app's key features in the prototype.

TESTING & IMPROVEMENTS
iterations & finalizing the design
We conducted user testing with a group of people who matched our target audience's demographics. The feedback we received was positive, with users expressing that the app was easy to use and visually appealing. However, we did receive feedback on the search feature, with users requesting more specific filter options.
FINAL PRODUCT
RESULTS & CONCLUSION
Our UI/UX design process for Scope It Out was guided by thorough research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and user feedback. We successfully created a personalized event recommendation system based on zodiac sign and horoscope, with a clean and intuitive design that met the needs of our target audience. The user feedback system also proved to be a valuable tool in improving the app's algorithm and user experience.
LESSONS LEARNED & SOME SELF REFLECTION
1. astrology isn't the only way to predict user needs!
While astrology played a fun and unique role in our app, we learned the importance of balancing that with a deeper understanding of user needs and preferences.
2. test. iterate. repeat. (x10)
The design process can be a roller coaster of ups and downs, twists and turns. It's normal to experience challenges and setbacks along the way. However, through consistent testing and iteration, we can gain valuable insights and make improvements to the design, much like climbing to the top of the roller coaster and enjoying the thrilling ride down to a successful outcome.
